We were then given time to discuss our assignments and we were given a run down of the 2nd stage of the assignment where we are to provide a peer evaluation of the assigned groups. We are then required to extend on their inquiry as part of stage 2 of the assignment.

Missed me much? I’m sure you have, no need to deny it.

Well now I’m back, lets leave all the celebrations for now and skip to the fun part — the blog.

So it took me a while to think of what to write about– really approximately 2 months — but like Franklin’s lightning and Newtown’s apple, I had my EUREKA! moment. 

This blog is dedicated to my thoughts that don’t want to be heard by those physically around me so I’ll post it here — to you guys and gals, to see what you guys and gals think. In this age of connectivity I think someone out there is bound to reply to my blog or read it.

Currently, I write this well aware of my  zero to one (me) readership, in the hope to network and learn from other people all over the world or maybe even in Australia.

Jambientals first official individual blog post

Coming straight from high school its very hard to deviate away from the ‘ rules ‘ and the neccessity of ’ formality’ particularly because for 6 years I was taught to be afraid of  the dreaded ’ I ‘ and ‘ me ‘ and anything involving personal opinion because it didn’t comply to guidelines, study guides, and it simply ‘complicated’ the high school classroom. So, blogging to me is now pretty much a new experience to delve into my own style and groove. As a media (Communications and Journalism) student this is especially important, for me to practice and ‘ enjoy myself ’ with blogging and other new medias because the mediascape is changing with media now being mediated through internet forms such as blogs, microblogs, and vlogs — just to name a few– and I really need to explore these facets because multimedia journalism seems to be the new direction. I guess really the whole point of this blogs going to be like my blog1001 lecture/tutorial with you guys being my tutors, lecturers, and mentors because your feedback will shape my blogs and teach me to be versitle and flexible with my writing. Socially,it too seems like I’ll have to come out to the online community to voice out opinions and thoughts so its pretty much like an open university. Now doesn’t that sound just spectacular. 

Now on a more serious and media related note, 

I was reading the newspaper waiting for my first arts1091 lecture on wednesday the 22nd of July and came across a baffling article about 4 high school suicides, all of which were from the same Victorian school, that have happened within the past year. These students were 14-16 years of age and some were bullied by fellow school students. What really grabbed my attention was Chanelle Rae who was bullied via the internet — although I know these cases aren’t new, with mobile phone bullying  and what not– it got me thinking about how the internet is and can be goverened by schools, parent’s, governments, and other students because it seems that despite technology’s rapid changes with new inventions and innovations we still have not developed away to govern or monitor these internet actions. Quite frankly, I myself don’t know whether i should trade of my privacy and anonimity to ensure that these things will not occur, or malicious actions aren’t constantly being secretly unpacked into our computers — damn! you trojan horses, spywares, and adwares– or keep these malicious actions for the sake of my privacy ( a nice big double edged sword isn’t it).

What really shocks me is the fact that the centripetal movement of media has somewhat played a part in the outcome of this tragedy with bullying now able to reach into the home aswell as in school leaving no safe zones for teenagers, or anyone in general. Home was once the safe comfy zone and now it can also be a breeding ground for school bullying.  

The Victorian Education Ministers choose to reply by simply saying  ” parents hug your children ” although that is an important aspect of it one really needs to take affirmative action in ensuring that this bullying issue is properly assessed and addressed because it is one major issue that all Australians go through. The issue of cyber bullying and bullying itself has been overshadowed and I really do think that its essentail to focus on this issue because we have seen its negative implications on young people, especially with technology and media now fast becoming integrated into our homes and daily lives. 

I guess I’ll ask you a question now I’m really curious as to what people would say — of course if they understood what I was going on about.

What end of the double edged sword would you take? Stay anonymous or relinquish your anonimity ? 

The world wide web is such a great tool because it makes everything happen — one stop shop for most information, a large online library if you choose to call it. Its a pity that its often abused.

Oh yeah! If some one knows ways of the internet being governed and what not please don’t hesitate to inform me I’m here to learn aswell.

Simon During in his text speaks about the multiple scopes of identity. Identity is not a simple concept particularly because it is not a fixed concept During comes to a summation that we in society cannot have an identity rather we have identities. These identities involving cultural and social paradigms, to name a few. It is interesting because without identity there is no individuality as identity is shaped and is obtained throughout an individuals lifespan.

Within identity there is also identity politics whereby individuals seek recognition for equality, respect. This is because some identities may not comply to social norms such as the rise and acceptance of homosexuality, feminism, and racial equality.

Societys is frequently dealing with identities through ‘sterotyping’ this can be seen in movies such as mean girls. This sterotyping is used to indentify certain characters often a ploy used to harbour empathy for characters, as individuals tend to empathise with certain characters leading them into the movie. However, this sterotyping is quite wrong as it always portrays one face of the individual. The movie uses white girls as a means of limiting the diversity enabling the lead to make certain sterotypes as they all have the same cultural background.

Indentity is particularly seen in modern media today particularly with the creation of the avatar, second life and online communities. Identites can now drastically change within the scope of cyberspace as there is not real means of identification in the hyper reality. The manifestation of a ‘reality’ creates identities that an individual may not be able to obtain in the real world enabling the ‘dumping’ of reality and identity to become a different person online. The ‘viral’ marketing enables individuals to rapidly create identities that are spread throughout cyberspace to change even the scope of Hollywood. The youtube epidemic has lead to cyber celebrites leading to the ‘youtube live’ concerts.

She displays this through the critical analysis of the ‘children overboard’ scandal.

Through it she discussed the use of sentence structures and words to inevitably portray the scandal. Within the texts that are provided within the article, the use of the image and the text are necessary as it displays and enhances the text, as it shows visual evidence of the ‘scandal’.

The use of generic specification such as the collective terms used to describe the perpatrators is used to involve the navy rather than the specific officers who participated in the cildren over-board scandal.Whilst the use of Role allocation indicates the positive or negative attention on the subject or the object. This is particularly powerful as it is an implied and automated without the author explicitly stating his or her point. It provides a sense of the active voice, presenting itself as more assertive and aggressive.

The use of generic specific dimension provides a very passive arguement as it does not state any responisbilty or provide any specific individual. Whilst charegtorizing dimensions provide a more active voice as it is singling out although it does not do it explicitly. The most active is the Role allocation as it is blaming an individual rather that simply generalizing.

These dimensions are clearly seen in everyday media to provide differing levels of meaning to enable different readers to interact with the text. It also helps create the tone of the text as it can essentially help in steering the writers angle.

Conclusively it is important to provide these all three dimensions to give the text different levels of meaning and direct the arguement towards the viewpoint of the author. This also helps with the creation of a multimodal text rather than just a simple plain text.

In this interesting article Anabelle Lukin talks about the power grammar and words have in order to manipulate ‘facts’ and inherently the truth. The main point of the article lies in grammar and words and how “grammar make you choose”(Lukin, A 2003; pg 15) Lukin talks about how choices on the way writing and speaking are in actual fact an unconscious decision made by the writer. Hence, her conclusion on language as being powerful through the use of grammar, to punctuate and steer agenda. She classifies the voices in texts as ‘middle’ and ’effective’- the middle voice not outlining anyone responisble for any actions and the effective placing responsibility. She also outlines the nominalisation of words in to communicate to other social networks, this involves the use of verbs as nouns an example is  ‘ The CRASH kills 7 people’ in that sentence the crash is to blame for an accident that may have killed 7 people. Nominalisations now opens up to more possibilities for language and its augmentations to suit agenda.0

 The Journalist apporacjes to the Bagdad bombings are used as an example she dissects grammar and words to display the media and politicians manipulation of actual events to inevitably agree to their arguments, the augmenting of truth to suit agenda. With many using the middle voice to deter any blame from countries, this also prevalent in white house officials speeches where blame was not given to the dropping of bombs  they said “Bombs were dropped” rather than “The american defence forces dropped bombs” These sentences can lead the article into differing arguemnts despite the common issue being covered that alludes to Lukin’s arguement that choices in the ‘agent’ , middle or effective voice, can construct completly different angles of the story

Conclusively, there are many more gramatical techniques that are used to inevitable augemnt and shift stories to specific meanings. Lukin comes to conclude that she has not gone through all and that it is essetial to study these grammar and the new grammatical developments within linguistics to truely uncover meaning to be a more informed and involved society.

The reading outlines a significant change within the mediashpere. The change at hand is the medias now expanded audiences. These audiences have deviated from initial audiences as the rapid growth of technology and the emergence of new media forms, the Internet. The change he describes is attributed to Abercrombie and Longhursts concept of the ‘diffused audience’where media further blurs the boundaries of the private and public spheres. Couldry attributes this blurring to three factors;

1. The availability and ease of access of the media, particularly in areas that are more wealthy. This enabling more people to communicate and create new nodes within the network society.
2.New media’s such as the Internet promoting and enabling global flow, altering spaciality to provide immediate and efficient communication from one country to another.
3. The interactivity of the media, now focusing on audience decisions moulding the mediasphere that deviates from the norms of the audience consumer and the media producers creators. This is blurred as now the audiences have the power to choose what is going to happen and when. This is particularly noted in reality tv such as big brother, where the audience is encouraged to interact with the media producers to alter what is going to happen next.

Couldry also points out Joke Hermes belief that the media and interaction with media, particularly in relation to the concept of ‘audience-hood’,  has made the media a pivotal part of society in shaping an individual “media culture … [a] way of constructing identity”(Couldry 2005; pg 189). This particularly opens up to the notion of Baudrillard’s idea of simulation, where within hyper reality we simply live out ‘reality’, accepting truth instead of whats real. It also now has crossed boundaries into industry, with the extension of audiences leading to the media tourism industry. Places such as Disney and Universal Studio’s make money on their studio tours, to see famous sets and costumes, although they have already seen these items they feel a distict physical spacial separation. This reiterates Post Modern belief, Baudrillard and Focault, that society merely imitates and augment reality blurring the truth to simply escape the real. This also proves the desire for the realtiy within television shows to come within our own individual hyper realities, further augmenting the real. A clear example that Couldry uses is the womans ability to recall memories from the show, as if they were to be her own or that of someone she is intimately related with.
